Managing Millennials

This model has two axes: investment and control.

By investment, I am not just talking about paying salary. Investment is about all the things measured and evaluated by your staff (whether millennials or otherwise) in deciding whether to join or stay: resources (IT and otherwise), support staff help, the time you spend teaching, challenging, feeding back, and listening. It is also the firm’s values, what its brand stands for, and whether the actions and behaviours in the firm match the rhetoric on the website.

The Control Axis is about the level of freedom you allow for millennials to develop their own styles, to learn, to experience, and to fail, before picking them back up and pointing them in the right direction.

Identifying where you fit on the axes as a manager and supervisor of grads will determine which group you fit into.
